As a foreign tourist, can I buy cannabis in the coffeeshops in the Netherlands?
The Dutch government wants to combat nuisance and crime around coffeeshops and drug trafficking. Unfortunately, therefore, only residents of the Netherlands are allowed to enter a coffeeshop and buy cannabis there.
The coffeeshop owner must check whether his visitors are residents of the Netherlands and whether they are 18 or older. It is therefore possible that a valid identity document or residence permit is requested at the door.
However, not all coffeeshops monitor their visitors with the same strictness. There are shops where you can walk in without showing your ID. It is not known to us which shops these are.
