Hello, I came today, Wednesday, October 2, and ordered a beer at 8:10 p.m. during the "supposed" happy hour, advertised on the hotel's website. When I asked the waiter at the bar, he told me that this offer no longer existed. I don't know if this is true or not, and I'll remain in doubt. But if this offer is valid and this man did this, I would feel a little cheated. Ask them to update the application. Thank you and best regards.
It was a really good spot , we got a private room with 2 bunk beds. The room was clean, so was the the shower room and the bathroom. The room itself was colorful and matched the theme of the hotel. The beds were actually very comfortable. In the lounge, they also have a smoke room which also has very cool design To summarize, here are the pros: 1. Friendly staff 2. Clean room 3. Comfortable bed 4. Cool designs and interior 5. Showers and bathroom were good As for the drawbacks: 1. Bad internet connection in the room: it kept cutting off and at some point I just didn’t use it. 2. This is minor but there should be an electric socket at the top bunk beds so that the person sleeping there can connect their phone. Overall I do recommend this spot, it is close to everything your need and the staff were nice.
I was backpacking around Europe in mid September and I had an amazing time here. It’s right in the center of town but it felt safe and honestly pretty quiet at night. The downstairs bar was fun and convenient. And the roof top was quiet and was a nice break form the busy city (good for late night calls). An easy walk to all the tourist spots. And a great “coffee shop” was just down the street. The rooms were incredibly clean and the beds weren’t too loud. My only small criticism is the shower didn’t drain quickly and water filled the floor. All hostel experiences are definitely dependent on who is in your room but I definitely recommend the female dorm, I felt safe and everyone was respectful and kind coming in late at night.
Just returned from a mid week trip and well where do I start ? 1st visit since that BS covid bug a few years ago ? Wow Wow Wow Bulldog 100% to the transformation on the hotel it was nice before little tired but very well kept. The transformation is amazing new reception, new lift, new rooms, new A/C, new bathrooms, bed was amazingly comfortable, staff as always amazing on reception and with in the lounge
Good place to go during the day for a smoke, beer and a game of pool. You don't have to be a guest to get into the bar but if you want to play pool bring €2 coins because they have no facilities to give you cash if you only carry card.
PROS: good location within the main area breakfast was quite good, although I would prefer the flexibility of buffet style. But even for €15 still worth it. Rooms and bed were nice If you are in Amsterdam for marijuana, you are allowed to smoke in the bar on the reception floor level and the roof above Good hospitality from the staff and some fun events recommended Your dormmates are more likely to be social than other hostels I’ve been to CONS: Not the best place to meet other travelers compared to other hostels that host events to meet others Charging for phone is only on the extension cable on the ground. Sucks if you’re on the top bunk Wi-Fi is poor on upper levels of this bldg.
I would call this a hotel with some dorm rooms, not a hostel. The roof deck and bar are nice but not as social as we had hoped. People mostly keep to themselves. The whole place was recently renovated which is nice, however the new air conditioning system is not functioning properly in several rooms and they are having trouble fixing it. Unfortunately we experienced broken AC in our first room and the room we got switched into. We also noticed a very strong foul sewer odor coming from the shower drain in one of the rooms and had to switch rooms. The rooms have the feel of a small cruise ship cabin. The toilet and shower are kind of built into the room and don’t feel very private- like you can hear the play by play. A positive is that the staff are very kind and friendly and did their best to accommodate us in less than perfect accommodations. The location is great- the center of everything on a beautiful street- and it’s surprising not loud at night.
Great location, friendly staff, extremely comfy beds and dark blackout blinds.
Don’t buy the prerolled if you want straight green. Doesn’t say on the sign and they’ll argue they told you it was with loud music pumping.
Good experience as on previous trips and staff was so kind & helpful. Love the central location
Would give me help at all, I met some wonderful guys who stayed at the hotel and I tried to leave the contacting info at the front desk, but none of the people there were interested to even take my info. It's true what they say about bulldog. It's a sad tourist trap who don't care about the people, only the money.
I stayed here in July 2023. This was unlike any hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I stayed in an eight bedroom. The beds had no curtains on them and there was one shower for the whole room. In the lobby, there’s a restaurant. This restaurant allows marijuana smoking indoors. This is only a con if you’re not a fan of that. Otherwise, the location is great and I would recommend this place if you want to experience this side of Amsterdam.
The best hostel in Amsterdam, with great value for money, excellent service & the best location for a (few) night(s) in Amsterdam!
Right where to start.. so just before covid I booked a 3 night stay at the bulldog, obviously it got cancelled and then for two years I couldn't get there because of the lock downs ect and rules. So I messaged the "manager" he said I can't get a refund but I can go when things are back to normal..which was perfectly fine with me. So for the past two years I've been emailing and trying to find a suitable weekend, all of those I can do were always fully booked, bare in mind I have 3 young children so can't just leave at a drop of a hat. He kept suggesting week days which it's hard enough getting a baby sitter over the weekend never mind to do the school run and other after school activities. But still I tried to find a solution. So in January this year I messaged with some dates, none of them was suitable, all was full and one date he said they was closing. My friends invited me to go in June with them for two days so I also checked this date and he said they would be close..I then said can I just take some vouchers for when I am there to spend in another one of your stores or shops and even offered to just take half the money. His response so very rude and not understanding to my situation at all, seems like I've been battling with this manager for 4 years now. I am so upset and disappointed by the way I've been treated. I saved for 1 year to afford that trip and it's always been a dream of mine to stay in the famous bulldog hotel amsterdam but I've just been left heartbroken. I've never known customer service like it, so bad, and from a manager. If this is the treatment I get from the uk I dread to think what it's like staying there..I've just been reading other reviews and I see people are saying the same about rude staff.. there's absolutely no need for the way I've been treated, and I'm going to speak a professional about taking this matter further, you can't just take some ones hard earned money..if doing this to a single mother makes you feel big Mr "manager" then I feel sorry for you.
Terrible customer service. It's really a shame for a big company like you to have employees who are rude, aggressive and don't know anything about customer service. And as your customer, when you have a problem, there is no one you can talk to. My partner and I went to this cafe. After ordering cake and smoke, my partner went to order 2 mango and strawberry smoothies, which the guy who worked at the bar. He told him that we only have mixed mango and strawberry smoothies. I asked my partner to order just one to try. If I wanted to order for myself, the bartender said we can't and our rule is that you have to order at least two right now. Order a drink. My partner asked him where they wrote this rule. It was here that he started being aggressive and said that this is the law and if we don't want we have to leave the cafe my partner asked again where did you write this rule . Finally, I tried to explain to him that I wanted to try and order if I liked, but he. He was so uneducated and rude that he didn't even want to listen to what we were saying. I wanted to talk to the manager, but they said no. They don't have a manager and we have to leave. Finally, I said I want to meet the manager. Talk or call the police. When the police came after my explanation, they said that their shouting was not polite at all, but because they did not threaten to kill or hurt me. They can't do anything. This is not the first place I've been to. I've been there all my life, but they are 100% the worst employees I've ever seen in my life.
I regularly visit Amsterdam and was told this would be a nice place to stay as the coffeehouse is with the hotel. I was very rudely turned away by Security when I went to check out the lounge. If this is how customers are treated I wouldn't recommend
We were there for the bar. Absolutely amazing experience. The bar is cozy and employees are friendly. The only bad thing is it closes 2am. We would be there drinking for the whole night if they let us
We didn’t stay in the hotel but visited the lounge bar. Couldn’t recommend it more highly! The staff and the vibe are amazing and the prices are fair! We will definitely be back.
Visited with my boyfriend. We stayed in the deluxe suit room at the top of the hotel which was clean & very nice with a beautiful canal view window. Amazing location and atmosphere, truly welcoming and friendly staff (Manuel and Fatu where both so lovely!) Ideal for smokers and younger couples who want a comfortable and fun holiday. Thank you so much for our amazing stay! P.s the bar and waiting staff in the lounge where also very kind :) definitely coming back soon!
Really good location. Nice staff and great bar area. Didn't have any issues in the 10 person room. Towels included and lockers are big enough but bring your own padlock. Could do with one or two more communal toilets and showers. Rooftop terrace is nice
The reception staff specially at night was extremely rude, when I gave this feedback to the day staff, they got defensive. Inspite of notifying/requesting for late checkout, the night staff yelled and said, you gotta be outta of your room with keys sharp at 11am (I checkout at 10:45am) Most likely run by a cartel. Scary and dirty to live. Definitely racists, not an ideal people to stay with people with colour. Beds are extremely uncomfortable and with molds, never saw housekeeping in two days.
Having visited The Bulldog Hotel many times over the years and tried their different rooms I feel ready to submit my review of what I think of the hotel in Amsterdam. Firstly it is in a very good location but do not bother getting a taxi here because on the narrow roads, it's better just to walk from the Centraal train station and it's about a ten-fifteen minute walk. The receptionist is always very friendly and is happy to help where they can, they are very knowledgeable about the area and can even sell tickets for you to go on a boat tour. There is a restaurant/bar deeper inside the hotel and you can smoke cannabis there but no tobacco. You can order some of the best food in Amsterdam here and I like that there are plenty of places I can charge my devices and it's great to be able to chill after a long day of travelling. Going upstairs there is a choice of dorm rooms or private rooms. You can use either the stairs or the lift. The dorm room is spacious and you have a toilet there to share with everyone. I didn't mind people there and I found the place to be safe while I can understand that there were strangers in the room with you everyone kept to themselves and no problems were caused. When I stayed in the private room I thought this was lovely and the bed was very comfortable and there was a lot of space especially to put my luggage in. They use euro plugs but they are easy to get and I once forgot to bring any and the reception were so kind to get that for me.
Pretty solid hostel. Bar was fun and had pool. I really liked the 4th floor terrace where you could hang out. Everything is pretty close to the hostel. Mixed dorms were noisy but that’s to be expected
Pros: excellent location, luggage storage before/after checkout, security, comfy beds Cons: dirty carpet in room along with foul smell, they took the buttons off the AC unit in the room so we couldnt use it! the “hairdryer” is literally just a dryer for your hands, extremely noisy outside when trying to sleep, 1 male employee working with glasses was so unpleasant upon check in, no common space for guests to hangout besides the rooftop, no kitchen, no guests allowed in rooms.
Great place! The food, the coffee is great, and so are the staff. As an aged 30+ woman I was thrilled to have found out I was on the top bunk. But i was pleasantly surprised to find the beds were so comfy! The shower was also great! And there is a "shop" only next door so you don't need to hunt for somewhere to buy from.
Great spot, nice rooms, staff are pretty useless especially in the bar. Some of them are really lovely the aussie girl in the lobby, yet they’re weighed down by people like the bar staff and this one lobby staff fella who was bald with glasses and a beard. Needlessly arrogant and short. Left a bad impression. Otherwise great hostel tho lol
This is a corporation, not a hostel. The Bulldog doesn't have a common room, a kitchen, or even group activities for people staying here. It's just a place for drunk tourists to crash. Drunk tourists who hate making friends: they don't let you bring guests upstairs. The hostel is actually one of several businesses owned by The Bulldog that take up a whole street in Amsterdam. They make you wear a wristband for your entire stay, which it like being branded with a neon sign saying "Drunk Tourist". At most hostels, some of the staff are backpackers working for room and board. They're your best friends as a traveler; they're always super chill and will help you out in a pinch. But most, maybe all, of the staff at the Bulldog are professionals. For them this is a retail job, so forget about having camaraderie with them. Rooms are low quality, even for a hostel. In our room, they didn't put hand soap in the bathroom, the lock on the shower door was broken, and I don't think the floors were mopped the whole week I was here. To operate the laundry, you need to buy special tokens from a vending machine downstairs that only accepts one Euro coins (not 2 Euro coins). It's not a big deal, but it's little annoyances like that add insult to injury.
Myself and my husband stayed here last week and we couldn't ask for anything more. This place is amazing. The staff are great. The doorman/reception guy was amazing too.We wer on top floor was never noisy, the roof top is just awesome the lounge is even better. So relaxed. Would 100% visit again. Only photos I got, roof top in day and night time views wer just gorgeous. I need to add that they do THE Best hot chocolate ever!!
This review is a bit perplexing for me. Excellent water pressure and water temperature, and a good size comfortable room for Europe, with comfortable beds. However, all of this is undone by what appeared to be an open air night club next door. The noise from this establishment was outrageous. It certainly made sleeping hard on our arrival night which was a Sunday, however on Monday the establishment was not open thus there was no noise coming from there. In addition to that most of the patrons of the “hostel” (and I say hostel because that is how they refer to it in the lobby at check in) are of a young age, and as expected they tend to be loud. Unfortunately our room was near the elevator and you could hear loud people at all hours of the night. It also did not help that I was on the 4th floor where there is a roof top terrace and it tends to be busy. The location of the hostel is also great and bad at the same time. It’s walking distance from grand central, with lots of restaurants and stores in the area. But then you have it right across the river from the red light district and it is located on a block full of coffee shops, so you sorta have to know what you’re getting into. However, right behind it is the royal palace and tons of great shopping areas. If noise was not an issue, this would be a great place!
When we arrived at this hotel we got our keys straight away and went up to our room, we were so disappointed with the quality of the room altogether. The walls were disgusting with stains, dirty marks and chips out of the paint. The carpet was filthy and the bathroom floor looked as though it had a layer of limescale over it. The overall interior of the hotel was just so old and run down it’s in serious need of a refurbish. We eventually got reception up to have a look at our room and she proceeded to tell my partner and I that all the rooms were like this but she would have a look for another room. We got moved to a room which was slightly better, still not great but better. It had a bath and shower and a lot less dirty stains on the wall. The aircon worked great and the tv also. Although we were on the first floor we couldn’t hear a lot from downstairs which was good too. The facilities of the hotel were okay, there is a bar restaurant which serves decent food and drink. It also has a pool table and gaming tables. In addition, you can also smoke in the bar restaurant until 1/2am and on the balcony on the top floor which is very handy. The location was 10/10, however my partner and I were devastated at the amount of money we paid for this hotel and this was the outcome, nothing in the hotel was really of the standard for what they are charging per night.
Absolutely trash. Our room was filthy, the shower had mould and holes in the floor and the staff were rude and unhelpful. Highly recommend going elsewhere because we paid $90+ a night and it was disgusting. Witnessed the man at the reception borderline yell at a guest because she couldn’t figure out how to open the luggage room door (because he forgot to open it).
There are lots of bulldog signs on the street, the one with the flower bike is the hostel. We really enjoyed our stay, I would happily return - we were in the twin deluxe which I think was affordable for a weekend if you want a private room considering the location and amenities. There were two beds, a bathroom and a nice view of outside. There's a terrace on the same floor. Small toileteries provided but best to bring your own. you'll need your own towel. Comfortable beds especially after a day of walking everywhere. In the private room, theres a kettle, teas/coffees, creamer etc - if you need these refilled take an example with you because I think I caused some confusion asking for more creamer. Generally staff are nice and will help to resolve any issues. they have friendly security outside. The food places in the area will be for tourists so you will have to venture away from the area if you want something not-touristy. There is storage for your bags when you arrive and leave. Location means you can walk to a lot of the key places. It is right by the red light district so the area is busy at night, our window blocked the noise.
Perfect for a teen to adult vacationer with an ideal spot in town for the red light district and coffeeshops. Staff were the real highlight, plenty of chat and friendly enough. Rooms were clean and not too cramped, less decor than the website, but nothing egregious. There's not much to complain about, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a sober trip through Amsterdam.
Exactly what you would expect from a hostel. The location is great, but it is definitely a more crowded and louder hostel. The wifi also does not work well. Good for those looking to explore Amsterdam Centraal and the red light district, but not well suited for those looking for a quiet stay.
The location was great, the room had working AC and clean bed/towels. The hotel was generally quiet and no problems with any outside noise. The hotel also had a good bar where you can smoke, drink and eat. The only downside is the breakfast, yes it’s cheap but all you get is basically a hand and cheese sandwich.
Great staff and clean dorms! The location is great too, 1 min walk to the red light street and 15 min walk to the train station. The breakfast buffet is worth it, 6 euros and you get eggs, bread, cheese, meat, milk, coffee, juice, etc. strongly recommend!
Location was ideal, very close to many pretty places. Beds were comfortable but the floor and bathrooms didn't feel the cleanest. Most of the staff were very nice and I felt safe while my stay there and it was cool that we got a sticker with the logo of the place on it when we checked out. Over all not a bad place to spend a few nights, but wouldn't stay for longer than 3-4 nights.
Couple Travel Review: My partner and I found this place when looking for cheap hostels in the city center. Basically, if you're looking for a good deal hostel, and your are planning to party and stay only in the downtown and touristy area, this is definitely the place to go. The best part about this hostel is the location. You are right in the middle of everything going on, and you are not that far away from the main train/metro station (Amsterdam Central). Getting to the Hostel is super easy and a great spot. The staff are all friendly and helpful, but for the most part you'll figure stuff on your own. We stayed in a 10 person room, and you would expect it to be chaotic but actually it was nice for the most part! There are bunk beds and really huge lockers so you can store a lot of stuff in there, but you'll need to bring your own key and lock (they sell them downstairs for €5). There is only one shower and bathroom so if you have a packed room, it could get a little crazy, but otherwise they're solid rooms. In terms of facilities, they have a lounge inside which is pretty cool looking. The wifi is okay but you're kicked out every 30 minutes or so which can be a little annoying. They also have a breakfast buffet in the morning, which you can include in your stay while booking, and honestly you can skip it, it was not anything special and we'd much rather get food elsewhere. There are not many group activities planned besides events in the lounge, so if you're a backpacker/traveling around Europe and are looking to connect with people, you can probably do so in your room but it won't be facilitated by the hostel. Overall it was a great place to stay, and we recommend it for anyone wanting to be in the party zone!
Location is great, everything is within walking distance. Hotel had it'd own bar for smokers and drinkers to chill. Has a pool table. Only bad thing I can say is the shower temp was all over the place but the pressure was decent. Perhaps it was just that one room and I'm sure they will fix this sooner or later
A very nice Hotel in the center of Amsterdam, The rooms are very clean and have all facilities, TV, internet and hot water , There is also an elevator to go up to the floors, on the ground floor there is a fully equipped bar where you can enjoy a snack or a drink or even get a breakfast which is amazing The staff is polite and willing to serve you with any question,Especially the hotel managers Jim and Robert are simply the best. Thank you for your hospitality. I hope to meet again sometime.
Loved this place mostly for the area. So many food options, shopping options and other things to see and do. I would recommend staying here if you want some place close to the attractions of Amsterdam. The video are just the area around the hotel and not the hotel itself.
Staying at the Bulldog Hotel was my favorite part of being in Amsterdam. Yes, Amsterdam is great and cool, but getting to know the people who worked at the Bulldog was the highlight of my trip and I was only there for a total of 4 nights (spread apart). I would definitely suggest staying here! Gave 4 starts for the room just because of how the bathrooms are designed. Anything I brought in the bathroom would get soaked while I showered because of how the bathroom was designed. Other than that, the beds were comfy and clean. The hotel was clean. The staff were incredible and the location was amazing!!
Top and super friendly front desk staff and security guards. Hotel well located in the center of everything with many options to eat, drink and smoke nearby. Lounge area was the place of choice, top location, fantastic space to smoke, drink and eat. The table service and some of the employees (not all) of the Lounge were the weak point, some were a little unfriendly and many times we wanted to order and they said they couldn't take orders and you had to get up to go and order directly to the bar, other times they said they couldn't take orders because they could only clean the table and that it had to be with another colleague not even making the effort to warn the other colleague and leaving immediately. Overall it was a very positive stay due to the location of the hotel the room and front desk staff. I would definitely return but just note that the service in the Lounge has much to improve.
This place is the best! It's smack down in the city centre with a lot to do. The staff is amazing (especially our waitress Maria!) and they create a really chill atmosphere. With nice music really a place to come back to!
Rooms were basic but comfortable, nothing to complain about. Beds comfy, bathroom has all you need. Rooms very red themed. Hotel location was great, right in the middle of everything. Coffee shop wasn't the cheapest but that's expected. Attracts a certain type of folk and definitely not the cheapest around...
I loved this place!! You may buy joints, grams, edibles and then hit the bar. Cosmopolitan was AMAZING. Service was good. Make sure to bring 0.50€ for every time you go to the bathroom. Nice place to watch a soccer match. Also laptop friendly :)
Clean beds, nice lockers, great location. However, the carpeting does not seem to be clean, the beds are very close together, and the shower looks like something’s out of a prison. The drinks at the bar lounge were very expensive. The breakfast was great and at least there is an elevator.
Very clean, very secure, quite cheap (26€ a night), nice staff members! With possibilities of women-only rooms, which is nice There’s a coffee shop within the hostel where you can chill, eat some good food and of course smoke if you want. Cute rooftop as well
I've stayed in this hostel twice in the 8-10 person mixed dorms and I really recommend it. The staff are so welcoming and friendly, the beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. It was really hot when I stayed there recently, but there was air conditioning in the room which was amazing. The lockers in the rooms are big but you should bring your own padlocks as they don't come with any. Really love the common areas such as the rooftop and the bar, very chilled atmosphere. The location is brilliant too, right in the centre and not far from all the main attractions.
We are currently staying here and am loving it. The staff are totally amazing and can't help you enough. We are in a private twin room with our own private bathroom. Rooms very basic but very Clean we are on the 4th floor next to the roof top terrace and it's lovely. A chilled vibe, only residents around the hotel, all day visitors have to stay on the ground floor We feel very sage and security don't mess around. The food is amazing here and the hotel is in such a central location. Definitely will be back
Brilliant hostel. Super warm greeting by the lady at check-in. The rooms were airconditioned (shocking for Europe!) and the bedding was really comfortable and the private lockers were spacious. The rooftop smoking area was a nice spot to hangout. Super central and in walking distance to pretty much everything you need to see/do.
Good atmosphere! Excellent squeezed orange juice! Good ventilation of the establishment.
Super dope coffeeshop, everytime I get back to the Amsterdam, this is the first place to visit!
Do not buy edibles, you will not feel anything and that for 7 euros.
I like that place!
